Class Project & SWOT Analysis

This past week was all about the class project. The goal of the project was to use the style of the art-house film ”Ballasts of Memory” by John Akomfrah. John Akomfrah uses is multiple screens to showcase his films, in this instance he used three screens. This film is currently playing at the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art.

In our project we all got a roll assigned to us, my role was to be the Director. During Phil’s lesson we all had to come up with our own idea and write it on the whiteboard. My idea was to do someones morning routine but have each screen be another room in the house. So for example the bedroom was the main screen in the middle, the bathroom was the screen on the left and the kitchen the one on the right. This way you could have the character move between rooms and jump in between the screen. It would have been a more playful take on Akomfrah’s style. This was not the idea we ended up with tho. We went with Phil’s idea that there was an unknown sound coming from a locker in the hallway that was bugging someone. I took this idea and gave it a bit of a twist, instead of having one person I decided to use multiple. This way the focus is not with the person but with the hallway, We went with a more cold and emotionless style that gives a eerie feeling.

In the second lesson of the day we discussed different tools to help problem solving. the most useful tool to me was the SWOT Analysis tool. with this tool you specify your strengths and weaknesses, and the opportunities and threats that that there are in our work field.

My strengths are the following:

Strong vision, Access to quality equipment, technical knowledge, stubbornness and my expertise and experience in the field.

My weaknesses are the following:

Time management, Attitude, Stubbornness and I am easily distracted.

The opportunities and threats in my work field are:

Opportunities are that there is always a need for entertainment and the price of quality equipment is lower. The threats are that there is more competition and that there is easier access to quality equipment.

Some strengths of mine are also some of my weaknesses. The best example of this is my stubbornness it is good to be stubborn and know what you want and how you want it but it can definitely stand in your way too.
